Alright.

First and foremost, the trail is blazing. The old commissions are being taken care of as I work through school, and hopefully that'll mean the backlog is gonna get a big fat chunk taken out of it. Hopefully. In the meantime--

No, the title doesn't mean I'm taking on new commissions. These are the conditions under which I'll take new commissions:

There are a lot of poeple ahead of you.
You're willing to be patient-- perhaps moreso than you'd like to be.
You may not even see a prelim sketch for a while.
IT'S GOING TO TAKE A LONG TIME.
It's going to cost more.

Secondly, there are some things concerning reprinting materials/etc.

You, the buyer, are not allowed to reprint a piece you've purchased from me. This violates copywrite laws. The only way to get around this is to buy out the piece and the materials that come with it. Just so people are aware, this costs a whole lot more.
You can purchase limited usage, meaning you can reprint the image as many times as you like so long as it's in a certain timeframe.

Which leads me to my last point.

Commission prices are raising.

Consketches and the like are still going to be what they were. But any and all listings I've had in the past concerning purchasing art are now null and void. I'm going to be re-writing the standards on how much commissions cost. Time is at a premium these days, and thus, I have to make sure that I'm not cheating myself. Call this pompous (as I'm sure many of my critics are going to be quick to do) but given the fact that I've got school and a backlog...

Well, let's just say that even after the backlog is cleared, the prices will be raised. Spending 8 hours on a piece and getting essentially tech support wages for it gets a little taxing, especially since it's a lot of work and I'm that much closer to screwing up my wrists in the long term. c_c

My work is appearing in/has appeared in both the arcade and PS2 releases of In the Groove II. Look for it and stuff. :B

I am currently running a one-day only run of on-the-spot OpenCanvas commissions. Anyone who knows how consketches work will know exactly how this goes. All you need to do is contact me as Carysse to discuss pricing/etc, and then you'll be given an IP address and a program to use in order to watch the process. If the commission takes more than a day, I won't accept it. This is only good for the here and now, and the offer will expire the moment I go to sleep this evening.

As I said, contact me via Carysse on AIM. These are for new commissions for people who are otherwise unable to cut through my backlog. And like I said, the only reason they're being offered is because it can be done swiftly.

Open Canvas Commissions

There is the opportunity for previous commissioners of Real Media Commissions
to switch over to an Open Canvas commission, or several, dependant on how much
they originally paid for their piece. The benefit of this is that you get to
watch me draw the piece, and you get a faster turn-around.

you're interested. Similarly, appointments can be made if you want to buy a
piece in OpenCanvas. I'll only be taking a small amount, and if I feel I can't
accomplish them on top of a prior workload, I won't accept them. The only
reason these are offered is they take very little time.

Hot damn. It's been forever and a day, hasn't it? Rest assured, commissions and the like have been worked on through my break. The only 'break' I took from them was a three-day window for people to get OpenCanvas commissions, the likes of which I'll be posting here in one massive jumble. Needless to say, this WILL be a graphics intensive post. Otherwise, there are some other items to discuss in the here and now. First and foremost:

The website is up and running under its new address of
ashryn.kryceksfox.com, as mentioned some time ago.
While it may not incorporate the aforementioned webcomic, it
will host the ongoing project Monsieur Le Eh and I are working
on, which is tentatively titled Bitter Season.

We look forward to where it'll take us, and we may start
working on ways to revise and polish the first few pages as we
go along. Which leads me to:

Bitter Season is the product of too many zombie movies,
for one. For another, it's the attempt to weave a story from two
distinct points of view. If you alternate pages-- 1 3 5 7, and vice
versa, then it makes a bit more sense. In the interests of being
more macabre with this particular piece, we've discussed the
possibility of this being a preliminary instead of the final
piece itself. We'll see how it goes. Either way, the pages take
under an hour to complete.

I'm debating whether or not to continue taking these. They don't
take very long, and I have the ability to host, so it works out
quite well. As a note to commissioners who are still waiting: if
you'd like to swap your commission over to several OC commissions,
then chances are you'll see turn around on them much faster. In any

Adult images from this commission pile will be posted behind a filter
in the next couple of days, if at all. Time is quite cramped now that the
semester is back in full swing.

[ :: Other Notes :: ]

Now that it's been established that no on gives a damn about copywrite
laws or anything of the kind, I've been posting the bulk of my recent work
with watermarks. The only way to get around this nowadays is to order prints.
Similarly, I request that anyone who knows of people pirating
my work via filesharing or otherwise please contact me immediately with
contact information. I've actually had a lot more people come forward
recently about this issue.

That said, Silent Hill: Life After Death is officially nearing
the end of its print run. One will be sent out to the original
commissioner, of course, but I've decided that only fifteen prints
total will be made of it. I won't retire it indefinately, but I won't
be reproducing it much other than at conventions. So far, it's reached
its fourth sold print. That leaves nine to go. Otherwise, other
pieces are up for sale via prints, and if anyone wants a particular
piece, it can be requested by emailing me. (ashryn (at) earthlink (dot) net).

I'll post more when I have the time to. As is, commissions are back to moving
slowly thanks to the semester starting back in, as mentioned. Similarly, I'll be
making a post detailing the latest finalized commissions either tomorrow or

ArghFuck

I'm stupid. I didn't even think to update this with the recent 'crisis.'

Basically, any and all commission orders are haywire. I lost all of my data in a severe harddrive crash a little over a week ago, and that includes ANY AND ALL digital commissions and/or PSD files I was slated to send off. What this also means is that I lost 5 years worth of artwork, a great deal of which I've sold off to random buyers. To say this is a fiasco would be putting it mildly-- as it stands, I'm shocked as hell that I'm not still in a numb cloud of 'WTF?!?' about it as we speak.

The dead HD is being worked on, but it doesn't look hopeful insofar as data retrieval is concerned. In the meantime, I'm working off of a shitty 17gig Western Digital that may or may not konk out on me as well (it's like... four years old) at any given moment. Ergo, I havn't loaded Photoshop up on it, nor does it look like I'm going to until I find a replacement for the 40gig that was lost. Yes, it seems like a 'convenient' excuse, but it's not. Ask feren-- he sat with me through the whole crisis, heh.

But, a lot's been destroyed. A lot of my written history is pretty much obliterated. That, and college is taking up a lot more of my time than I wagered. I've gotten a couple of icons finished as well as some more sketch material, but like I said, I've lost any and all descriptions that have been sent to me and/or archived for commission-related use. If you had any wish of using art that I've done for you on Furcadia, please refrain. I've had enough problems with that service to consider it worth it to have my art any more publicly displayed on there than it already is WITHOUT my permission. It's getting to be as bad as Neopets in this aspect, and I refuse to be a part of it.

Call this an official boycott-- call it whatever. I'm tempted to urge other artists to do the same simply because of the place's reputation of being a haven for copywrite infringement. Despite the fact that the people who run it are supposedly 'investing their own money' in the services and are failing to make much money off of it, they're still ACCEPTING MONEY for a service they don't police in the least.

We call this wrong.

Commission Information

This is an open letter to all of my commissioners. It will be repeated everywhere I'm certain people will see it; it's not reccomended that any gentle pats on the head are doled out in direct response to this, as that's not what I'm looking for.

I know I've been rather petulent about wait times and the like. The fact of the matter is that under stress or not, my inspiration is a picky thing. If I can't think of something adequate and worth the money (I trump the hourly wages at times, I know, but keep in mind that I have the opinion that my work is worth much, much less) I get frustrated and put the commission aside for a breather. What happens with this is that there's higher wait times for clients I'm very favorable towards; deadlines aren't met with as much vigor as they could be.

No, that's not a very brilliant business practice.

Sadly, when it comes to most commissions, my creativity gets run ragged. I've debated why this is, and I have theories, but it's hard to say exactly what it is. What this is leading to, however, should be obvious:

I'm sorry for your wait times.

Truly.

To that end, people have accused me of taking advantage of peoples' generosity. This isn't so; the fact of the matter is, I take on more than I can chew on a daily basis. My stress levels aren't 'normal' by any means, and a lot of it ends up being self-imposed. Ever since this has become my primary mode of income, the stress is nonstop. I -have- taken on more than I can chew, and I -have- overshot my load, as the case may be. Sadly, I still need to make money.

When I put posts up saying I hope people think it's worth it, I mean that. The wait time often reflects how much effort is being put in-- a lot more sketchwork goes in than most would like to think. As it stands, I could do a hundred sketches and be so disgusted with all of them that the client doesn't get to see so much as one. However, let me say, without hesitation: you are -not- forgotten. Never forgotten. You havn't been shrugged off or taken advantage of-- you, like many others, will recieve what you paid for, and often times it comes with a 'and then some' attached to it. When you see me produce 'my own work' and post it, I'm not deliberately ignoring my obligations.

This is why I try as hard as possible to never give a defined deadline, and I -accept- it when people aren't willing to wait for a 'whenever.' Those that ARE have been wonderful, and I appreciate your willingness to continue waiting.

Once again, this is by no means an attempt to rally sympathy.

If it were, I'd mention a lot more things I'm not mentioning here, because you don't need to know, and you don't need to be bothered by it. What you KNOW is that there's nothing in front of you, as opposed to a finish piece of artwork. What you KNOW is that it seems like I've run off with your funds and refused to acknowledge that I have a responsibility. As it is, I KNOW THIS, and I know it well. This is the source of guilt, of -shame-, of regret. Things I should get done, bigger projects, I burn out on faster than I can get them completed. Occasionally I get struck with a bug and I can tear through pieces without a second thought.

However, this in mind...

Commissions are now CLOSED.

Things will be mailed out as scheduled now that the move is completed. Once the items are unpacked they will be sent out accordingly. Thank you for your patience, and thank you for your time.

The Journey Begins

Valerieeee, valeraaaah...

Well, not only is final registration happening tomorrow, but we're moving, as well. After getting socked with bills and general living expenses (see: food, etc), however, I'm still staring at a noticable dent of shit in my account. Expectedly, this is doing nothing for the 'condition' I've started to notice (lung infection? nope. panic attacks.) and my art block has started to get hiked again. I've managed to finish all of one decent icon in all my nights of work, and believe me, I'm not thrilled about it.

slow_mo_panda, I'm not avoiding your emails. I'm trying to think of a decent design. Your's, like a couple others, need more serious revisions. Perihelion's piece had to be scrapped completely thanks to an inconsistancy, and now I'm starting that one over. A couple other people are getting the same overhaul, since I'm noticing glaring errors in the drawing process. Nothing is turning out well at all...

In other news, if people want to buy originals, now would be the time... -.-

I don't like putting this back up here, but it's still crunch time.

Maybe jamming a soup spoon two inches into my jugular will solve these problems. :P

Pricing Overhaul :: Please Donate

Very soon now, I'm going to be forced to up my prices. Some of you are probably asking why-- well, here's how it goes: imagine you're a skilled worker. You work for an advertising firm or what have you, and you're asked to deliver premium work for a total of $3/hour tops, if you're lucky, and if inspiration hits properly. You have to support yourself and your loved one, make ends meet, and somehow be able to go through a move.

Now, a lot of you are familiar with this whole moving thing. If you're jumping ship to another apartment especially, you need a security deposit, as well as first month's rent. The problem inherent with this is that, suddenly, you're working for $3/hour in a dead-end market and you're not generating any tips like a waitress does. So, what can you do? Raise your prices.

I'd like to think the quality of work I give is worth more than $3 for every single hour I put into it. I've been quiet about it because most people think I charge outrageous prices to begin with-- well, sorry. I'm beginning to realize that my workload is far too immense to be working at the prices I am. I'm busting ass for peanuts, scraping by like a toothless hobo... and honestly, I'd like a couple pats on the back for it.

$3 is under minimum wage.

I do this for a living.

Can we see a problem, now?

I don't mean to come off quite so snarky, but please understand, that 'moving' situation is where I am right now. If you've ever thought my work is worth looking at, worth anything, now's your chance to help. Don't want me to raise prices? Please donate to ashryn@earthlink.net via PayPal. I hate going about it like this, but I'm afraid I have no choice. I have to have a roof over my head, just like the rest of you. I have to have a place to live, just like the rest of you. I'd PREFER not go to a youth hostel, just like the rest of you. As it stands, I've been extremely generous with my services, to a point where I'm very, very backlogged.

If you ever liked my work, even $10 is appreciated. If you'd like my work to continue to be posted, please help me get a home. This isn't a mercy plea, I'm not about to turn around and spend the money on something frivolous-- what I want is a place to stay, and a chance to live before I go into college and get support through official channels. What I want is to continue to do the artwork people have come to enjoy from me, and enjoy doing so without worry.

Here in Madison, the job market is crap for those of us without college degrees, even those of us who are striving to get one. And starving without.

Well, I'll tell you. And if you don't like the answer, piss off. Rude, you say? Not really-- I was in LA looking at colleges, for one. After this, I hit a massive art block, capable of pulling off only the most menial drawings.

A week later, I'm where I am now-- with a lung infection, nearing on a negative balance in my bank account. So you'll have to excuse me if I'm a little unsympathetic to patience being tried at the immediate moment-- I'd like to think that breathing is more important than art. If some of you would like to say otherwise, feel free to refute me. ;P Which, in that case, I'll merrily wish this 'not being able to breathe' phenomena over to you.

A Moment--

--To give a heartfelt thanks to the lot of you commissioners who've waited patiently for your pieces. As per usual, I like to give freebies to the people who wait, and I will contiue to. Otherwise, I'd like to remind you that it's appreciated, and that the breathing room is a necessary evil to the trade. Inspiration comes and goes for certain images, and if I sense that something's 'off' about a particular image, I end up trashing the entire project and starting over. Moreover, if I'm not feeling any kind of muse in terms of a certain project, it ends up coming out clumsy-- and honestly, I'd like to see everyone get their money's worth rather than have a rushed image.

This may sound like rationalization, but it's true. It's difficult to put into words how inspiration really works. I don't like that it makes people wait, but on the other hand, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the commission turn-around is little more than a couple weeks of time-- sometimes it's an ungodly stretch I'm ashamed to mention. Either way, I do my best to be certain that the lot of you get the pieces that you paid for, that you want, that you envision in your minds as perfect for your needs. It helps to constantly talk to some of you via AIM, but not everyone on my commission list also has a livejournal.

Anyway, on to some pet projects of my own.

It's difficult to write what's essentially a mob
boss without being too hokey. I know my
intentions with the character, but I've never been
certain if others see him is another typical addition
to a writer's character stable. Nonetheless, the boy
deserved a better profile image.

Initially, I didn't think much of Attesa as a
character. She didn't seem to have much of a
story, or anything forthcoming. In the midst of
pencilling this piece, it became clear she had
more to her than she was initially letting on.
She will be appearing in the comic, perhaps a bit
sooner than I'd intended. While her story is
a bit like Mamoulian's relationship with the
Razor Eater... well... As for the last name, I'm
deliberating over what her real one will end
up being.

Charmaine has been itching to get bits and
pieces of her own story down on paper. Be it a
run-down of more youthful times or a sordid retelling
of more recent history, something needs to be said.
While anything including her will inevitably be given
an NC-17 label, it's still worth it to me to write it
out. With her, the why is always as interesting as
the what, in terms of what she does. A 'younger'
member of the character stable in that she arrived
in 2002. Nonetheless, she was quickly assimilated
into the growing pile...

L'himby arrived on the scene in early 1999, and
has been seen throughout my Yerf gallery ever since
I first got on there. Out of all my characters, she's
recieved the most imagery in terms of gifts and trades.
(at least upwards to 50!) Another character
that fits the 'woe' mold, she has a rather distressing
story of her own in the midst of the comic, and has
always been a more prominent member of the cast.

Eventually, I'll figure out a way to accurately
depict her story. Until then, I'm not at liberty to say
what's in store for her *heh*. As if it's of interest...

Portfolio Inquiry :: New Website

You all have seen the highlights of the recent sketchfolios I've been placing on FurBid. If not, everything that's recent in my VCL directory is from those in particular. Not Work Friendly Whatsoever. My question to you is what the market wants to see from me, specifically, these days. Consider this an open letter to finally tell me what you'd like to see more of.

In the meantime, a big fuckin' thanks to kryceksfox for making my mind up for me *laughs*. Midway through this month, she surprised me by dumping the new location for the upcoming website into my lap. Cathode Ray Mission will still exist on Parodius for now-- as it is, it's more like a signpost for my various archives. Until then, ashryn.kryceksfox.com is going to be the home of the comic itself.

As a funny note, you know I'd never considered Ashryn for a plausible story character? Well, guess who's being highlighted first...

Webcomic?

That's right. I'm debating it. The problem is, I don't know how long my website at Parodius will be up and running. What this means is any projects I endeavor to complete on this server will need to be moved indefinately, as I understand Parodius is shutting down. Now, I love this server, and it loves me, but we're seeing the problem here.

If anyone has webspace/domain stuff they can hand me, it'd be awesome. If not, that's fine, too. ^_- I'll figure something out when push comes to shove.

Anyway, in lieu of being relatively unable to do a legitimate comic project with all the bells and whistles, I'm going to start trying to post the running storyline in bi-weekly installments. (...we'll see how long this lasts, I know.) It'll be loose, slated for later finalization but otherwise quickly done without being sloppy. Problem is figuring out a coherent way of introducing the cast. >_>

It'll give people something to watch out for.

But, this leaves me with a somewhat important question. People are vaguely familiar with my character stable, but I never hear too much about who's the most interesting. My question to you, the viewer, is simple. In the upcoming webcomic, who, out of all of them, would you like the see in terms of substance? Kind of an arrogant question, but I'm really curious.

There is no lighter side of the news. However, what there is is an all-male XXX sketchfolio. Yes, another one. I didn't want to have to do this, but with projects falling through left and right, I'm left with little choice. There will be two portfolios up by tomorrow, but the one up currently is canine based. Any and all pieces I do for this auction will be uploaded to My VCL Archive.

Buyers will have a choice of a sixth plate, which will be rendered in the sketchfolio style, unless the price is right. In which case, they can request to have one of the pieces re-rendered in Photoshop. Please take a moment to look it over; use that tax refund for some high quality wank material. Alright. Some of you remember this one from its conception. Well, it's a completed commission that's doubling as a portfolio piece (since it was the best piece available that I could finalize with decent composition). So here we are with the whole damn thing completed. I figured for this post I'd show the entire progress of the piece, since it's been a long goddamn road to completion. Here goes nothin'--

One of these has a bit of a spin on it, but the other is the same as always. But, first things first...

First off, there's an Exclusive Sketch Folio Plus 10 Originals running, with these as examples of the work you'll be getting:

As it is, this time around I've got a couple freebies for commissioners who've waited for a while. Yes, this is pretty customary. ^_- Placing the non-related ones behind a cut.

Alright, so, I know a lot of you are looking at this going 'wtf?! Where's my shit?!' Well, here's the deal. A lot of the above, the photoshop works, I want to have enough of so I can sift through, choose the best, and put them into a college portfolio. Taking a chance on them being furry pieces and all-- regardless, I've been focussing all of my efforts on getting these and other pieces completed for the sake of meeting an early deadline.

Sketchbook Auctions

Still hard at work in the land of art-dom. Of course, there have been some hangups; art slumps are brutal and they're coming in droves. At least y'all can be assured that I make up for it in week-long stints of super-productivity. In the meantime, there are three sketchbooks for sale on FurBid, all of which I'll list here:

[2002 Sketchbook (1)] :: The first of the three books from 2002 being offered.

[2002 Sketchbook (2)] :: The second of the two. This one is smaller than the others, but still has a good amount of finished work inside. The binding is negligable.

[2002 Sketchbook (3)] :: The third and final book for auction, this one is sturdy, has good binding, and all of the pages are heavy cardstock.

Each and every one of these books covers a wide range of material uploaded to VCL and my other various archives, which can be accessed easily enough via my homepage. I admit, if I see them all go for $250, I'll probably cry, but even then I can't say much about it. I was reluctant to consider these up for auction, but times being as they are-- well, you know the drill.

I'm not big on copying other peoples' statements insofar as rants are concerned. I'm a bit too used to having particularly well-thought-out bits of ranty material get thrown up on other peoples' once they see that it actually makes a good and valid point. Nonetheless, this matters, and it will continue to matter.

For the longest time, this fandom has expected it's artists to work for peanuts. When I feel overwhelmed by how long I've made someone wait, I majorly overcompensate, and I'll admit I undersell myself a whole fucking lot for you people. But there's one thing that will continue to remain unforgivable, and I will ALWAYS view as a grave insult.

Anyone ~~who's not a knuckle-dragging cocksmack~~... ~~who has any grasp on tact as opposed to their dick~~... ~~who has any sense of decency and the definition doesn't include pasties~~... who respects the art world is willing to pay for what they ask for. Quit fucking asking me to do free shit for you when you're an underpayed college student. Let me paint a picture for you, and maybe it'll make it more obvious:

Say you're working you're ass off. Say this work takes upwards to 10 hours a day if you sit and calculate all of it out. Say that someone walks up to you with a shit-eating grin and a hard-on for your very sanity and says, "By the way, you're not getting a paycheck for it because someone requested that it be free work," would you be very happy? ...Well, would you, Oh King of Tact? Would you spring to your feet and say "WHY YES MY LIEGE I WILL BEND OVER AND TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE WEARING THE DILDO FROM SEVEN!*()@()"? NO. You wouldn't.

SO WHY THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT ME TO?

Huh? What the fuck is so hard to understand about 'I DO THIS FOR A LIVING?' What the fuck is so hard to understand about respecting an artist's trade an the work they put into their pieces? What is WRONG with this fandom?
